Fourteen years between September18th Incident in1931and August15th in1945,Northeast China was occupied by Japan and new literature development suffered fromcolonial cultural domination. From the point of view of the literary societies, this paper selectsthe two most important literary societies when Northeast China was occupied by Japan:Wen Cong Literature Society and Yi Wen Zhi Literature Society as the object of this study.This paper investigates the development of new literature in the Northeast during theoccupied period. The literary activities of Wen Cong Literature Society and Yi WenZhi Literature Society were basically the pillar of new literature development and essentiallyrepresented the highest literature achievements of enemy-occupied area in Northeast China.Together with other literary groups, they promoted literature in the Northeast occupied areasto enter a prosperous period.Wen Cong Literature Society has inherited the new literary realism spirit and stressed thesocial utility of literature. They advocated to give a “truthful description” and “truthexposure”, hence to use literature as the basic appeal against colonization. The core figureShan Ding proposed his “local literature” idea, and paid emphasis on literary authenticity,epochal character and local characteristic. Based on the literature, it showed people’s sufferingand exposed the darkness of society. During the occupied period, Yi WenZhi Literature Society produced most abundant writings and publications, and it was also themost complex literary societies with political and cultural identities. The core figure Gu Dingadvocated “massive writing and publishing” and “directionless-oriented “. He stressed that weshould start with the number of works to thrive the literary world.Wen Cong Literature Society and Yi Wen Zhi Literature Society reflected the differentdeveloping direction of the new literature under the colonial background, and also stood forthe literary attitude of the intellectual writers.There were also mutual penetration and influence, competition and confrontationbetween Wen Cong Literature Society and Yi Wen Zhi Literature Society. The study on themcan give a reflection of the new literature’s evolution in literary concepts and aesthetic pursuitin the Northeast Occupied Areas Literature. This paper intends to adopt ontological returningorientation, breaking away from dualism and ideological discourse paradigm and respect forthe historical facts. Based on the principle of coexistence, the author gives an interpretationand comparison between the two literary societies with different characteristics on theirliterary and artistic life. This paper is divided into five parts. The introduction part describes the literatureoverview of the Northeast occupied areas, and then discusses the evolution of the literary andartistic policy by Japan and Puppet Government. Chapters One and Two presents a basicoutlook of Wen Cong Literature Society and Yi Wen Zhi Literature Society from theperspectives of the formation process, composition members and publishing activities.Chapter Three studies the literary debates between Wen Cong Literature Society and Yi WenZhi Literature Society. The largest literary debates between the two literature societiesessentially expressed the different views of the two societies based on the same new literaryposition on the path of the new literature development under the colonial background. ChapterFour compares their different literary expressions on two important literary motifs “suffering"and "family”. Chapter Five discusses the partial and overall two-way communication betweenWen Cong Literature Society and Yi Wen Zhi Literature Society under the background ofoccupied areas literature and modern chinese literature. The conclusion explores from theperspectives of intellectuals personality selection and literature selection, and discusses theessence of two different literary attitudes of Wen Cong Literature Society and Yi WenZhi Literature Society.
