A Study Of The Newly Produced Words In Modern Chinese Dictionary (6th Edition)

Language changes with the development of the society. Since the reform andopening up policy, China’s social and economic life of great change has a profoundeffect on Chinese language. Among them, the change of the vocabulary system stays inthe most significant place, new words emerge endlessly.In July2012, the commercial press published "Modern Chinese Dictionary"(6thEdition) was published officially. More than3000new words and more than400newmeanings are added in that dictionary. The composition of these new words reflects thedevelopment and change of vocabulary system. The forms and meaning contents ofthese new words have different performances:The emergence of new words is the product of social development, culturalexchanges, language evolution such as the product of many factors. These new wordsare different from the already existing words in such aspects as structure form andmeaning content. Its main characteristic is that its generating time is short and full offreshness. During the process of formation of new words, its form and meaningcontent have different performances, and there are mainly four kinds of circumstances:Firstly, the form and concept are new. Secondly, Form is old, but concept is new.Thirdly, form is new but concept is old. Fourthly, both form and concept are old.Among them, the first circumstance creates new words, from form to meaning, andthey are all brand new. The second case retains the old form, just produces newmeanings. The third case carries on the meaning of the words in the new load which isnot new. The fourth case will be some changes in terms of meaning, and some may notproduce new elements, but in the years of language communication, some resurgenceand are already been covered within the scope of the new words in the study. Thesewords are initially appeared as people’s innovative products and they are the results ofpeople’s perception of the objective world, experience, and observing things cognitive.This thesis studies the new words of "Modern Chinese Dictionary"(6thEdition)on the basis of the theory of cognitive linguistics. The thesis discusses their cognitivemotivation, meaning structures and changes, meaning evolution, motivation ofmeaning change and cognitive mechanism. Among them, the meaning of new words constitute characteristics, changing rules, the meaning of word meaning evolution ofmotivation and cognitive mechanism are the points of this thesis. Discussing the newwords from the angle of cognitive, discovering their language and cognitive rule,which can explain the way how they develop from individual words to more stablelanguage composition, which opens a new door for understanding new wordscomprehensively. At the same time, because the meaning of cognitive linguisticsstudies pay more attention to the cognitive style and cognitive process of wordmeaning changes in the structure and meaning, therefore, studying the new word of"Modern Chinese Dictionary"(6thEdition) from the perspective of cognitivelinguistics angle gives a huge enlightening and guiding significance to new wordsteaching of teaching Chinese as a foreign language.The thesis is divided into seven parts except the conclusion.The first chapter is introduction, mainly summarizes the research significance ofthis topic, research status, basis of this selected topic, the confirmation of corpus, theresearch methods and research program, at the same time, it gives a brief statement to"Modern Chinese Dictionary"(6thEdition), and clarifies the theoretical basis the mainproblems which are going to study.The second chapter is literature review. The review summarizes the previousresearch results of domestic and abroad new words and meanings, and puts forward thefocus in the study of new words and meanings and the existing insufficiency, andclarifies in this paper as the main problem of study.The third chapter investigates the number, the source distribution and types ofnew words of "Modern Chinese Dictionary"(6thEdition) and it points out severalproblems have been met during the study of new words of "Modern ChineseDictionary"(6thEdition). At the same time, the third chapter also defines the meaningof new words according to the content of the paper selected topic.The fourth chapter mainly analyzes the cognitive motivation of new words, themeaning content and characteristics of new words. The thesis analyzes the etymology,morphological motivation, sources of new words from the aspects of phonetics,morphology, semantics, etymology, etc. In addition to the lexical meaning, colormeaning and grammatical meaning of semantic contents and the meaning of newwords in a certain extent show the unique personality characteristics, vocabulary significance of pluralism, openness, cluster and serialization. Words in the grammaticalmeaning is mainly concentrated on the nouns, verbs, adjectives, and in the majoritywith nouns, verbs；on the aspect of syntax function, it gives priority to subject, object,attributive noun, a verb is given priority to the predicate, adjectives mainly attributiveand adverbial, etc.; On the aspect of collocation relations and from the perspective ofphrases, it doubles that syllable nouns are often combined with other nouns, and showssome regularity.The fifth chapter analyzes the words meaning changes condition of "ModernChinese Dictionary"(6thEdition). For semantic change, it mainly sums up three typesof order and meaning change and comprehensive adjustment. Meaning of adjusting thesequence refers to the order of commentaries on the change. Definitions change refersto the content of the entry word meaning change, namely a kind of replace, amend orchange of meaning contents of "Modern Chinese Dictionary"(6thEdition) to (5thEdition). Comprehensive adjustment refers to the entry word meaning changescontains definitions grows, cut or interpretation of two kinds of the headwords and twokinds of the above situation changes.The sixth chapter takes the new words of "Modern Chinese Dictionary"(6thEdition) as its example, from the angles of cognitive development cause newdissimilation, language expression and self value realization of cognitive demand, andanalyzes the reasons which cause the change of the new words and explores itspragmatic change rule.The seventh chapter studies the new words meaning in the application of teachingChinese as a foreign language, mainly discusses the problems existing in new wordsteaching, solutions, teaching principles and methods. Teaching strategies and principlesincludes: improving the understanding of morpheme meaning and function ofmorpheme; Establishing new words combining form of semantic relations; aftermorpheme meaning of link principle; and learning the new words of syllogismprinciple, etc. Teaching methods mainly includes the method of combination of words,the method of combination of grammars and words, the method of combination ofwords and cultures, etc. At the same time, it puts forward to strategies and methods ofthe correct words and semantic errors during the process of teaching Chinese as aforeign language. Finally, the conclusion part summarizes the whole thesis, and the deficiency ofthis study is pointed out and the problems which are concerned to be paid moreattention in the future research.Tracing investigation of the modern Chinese new words can serve for the historyof Chinese language, can provide language materials for Chinese dictionary andordinary language dictionaries; can provide all kinds of local chronicles compilationand revision of the language materials. Analysis of modern Chinese new words, andtheir meanings and researches can provide some references to readers; especiallyoffspring readers, to check the meaning of new words in a certain period. Analysis andstudy of Chinese new words can be used for the Ministry of Education and NationalLanguage Committee, such as Chinese language life status for reference, which canalso provide the latest information for Chinese new words teaching.
