With the construction of Three Gorges Project, unprecedented scale archaeological survey and excavations in the Three Gorges regions have been developed in more than a decade. The more archaeological information was made in recent years, the more ancient culture in the region was showed to us gradually and the research in the Paleolithic and Neolithic culture has aroused great interest. The paper studies a subject of prehistoric age livelihood pattern in the region through a vast amount of archaeological data and on the basis of predecessors’ research.Three Gorges region forms a relatively independent geographical unit as a joint of eastern and western China. It has special geographical conditions. The unique gorge landform and the climate influenced a lot on the livelihood patterns of prehistoric humans. Alluvial fan formed by the river terraces and alluvial plains with the fertile soil provided a best living environment for the ancient humans, karst caves are natural habitat of the ancient humans, the Yangtze River and its tributaries and the flora and fauna were rich resources as food and water for them, pebbles brought by rivers and the rocks around caves were raw and processed materials making stone tools. The archaeological data shows that fishing and hunting economy plays an important role in the prehistoric life around the Three Gorges region and agricultural economy failed to develop in a great quantity from the Paleolithic period to the Neolithic period. The fishing and hunting economy, which is dependent livelihood pattern, closely related to the geographical environment. The cultural development of the Three Gorges areas was restricted by rich flora and fauna resources and a well-developed fishing&hunting industry to some extent.The paper is divided into five chapters. The chapter one is an introduction of the background, purpose and significance of the paper. It determines the space and time of the study and reviews, summarizes the archaeological discoveries and research history of the Three Gorges area, describes landforms and climate change of the Three Gorges area. The chapter two tells the culture of the Paleolithic period in this region and studies the livelihood pattern with the stone technology, The chapter three tells the culture of the Neolithic period and gives a minute description of fishing, hunting and agriculture economy in the region and makes a penetrating analysis to cases in the light of the historic sites. The chapter four is about Prehistoric housing.The chapter five is the conclusion of the paper. It concludes the characters of prehistoric age livelihood pattern in Three Gorges area and analyses the cause of it.
