The idea of core competence, born in the early1990s, once guided countless companies get back to their healthy development like a bright beacon. To date, it has become one of the most efficient management tools for contemporary corporations. Numerous researches have been done for this idea. Its effect has gone beyond the corporative management to the national economy as a whole. Meanwhile, the global sports industry is surging, especially in the developed countries led by the U.S.. It is playing a very important role in the national economic and social construction. To analysis the fundamental motivation for the development of the sports industry in the perspective of core competence is useful for the study of sports industry and core competence both theoretically and practically. Moreover, China is now facing with a historic opportunity to develop its sports industry. The related researches can boost the development and competitive advantages of sports industry in China.This paper is based on the knowledge and theories of Marxist philosophy, economics, management science, sociology, logic and other disciplines, combined with the use of literature, expert interviews and surveys, case studies, comprehensive comparison, mathematical statistics and other methods. At first, the author discusses the core competence and the basic theories of the sports industry, building a systematic framework for the theories and evaluation in this field. Then, the author carries out a qualitative evaluation and comprehensive analysis of the core competence in the United States, Britain, Italy, Germany and other developed countries, as well as China, in terms of sports industry, hence puts forward the basic countermeasures to cultivate and improve the core competence of China’s sports industry. The main content and conclusions are as follows:1) The core competence research is very rich, but their views differ greatly, which is rooted in the lack of a unified and scientific methodology. Thus, starting from the origin of the core competencies, the author puts forward the fundamental methods to understand the core competence, i.e., analyzing the principal contradiction and the main aspects of the development of things. Also, the author analyzes the concept and the characteristics of the core competence.2) There are also a lot of controversy in the current understanding of the connotation and denotation of the sports industry. Therefore, the author redefines the concept of the sports industry by using industrial economics theory and formal logic rules. The author redefines the sports industry as a collection of corporate economic activities, whose business goal is to gain economic profits, direct goal is to meet consumers’need in sports services, and main products are physical exercise or sports. Sports industry has two categories:sports competition performance services and sports fitness entertainment services. Sports-related industries have clear boundaries with sports industry. Sports industry is basically highly associated with high added value.3) By using the core competence research methodology proposed in this article, the author makes a comprehensive analysis of internal and external contradictions affecting the development of the sports industry. The main contradiction is the contradiction between supply and demand, and its main aspect is supply. Through the in-depth analysis of supply link, the author then puts forward the idea of sports industry’s core competence, defining it as a capability to develop and innovate the multivariate value of sports products so as to create and meet the diverse needs of consumers. It includes the abilities to recognize the value in use of sports products to design and use sports products. It carries the common features of core competence and holds its own unique characteristics as well. In addition, the sports industry’s core competence needs a benign mechanism for growth, both endogenous and exogenous.4) Evaluation indicators of core competence and growth mechanism are tentatively made on the basis of previous theoretical studies. By the means of specialist interview and investigation,3first class indicators and14secondary indicators of evaluating core competence of sports industry and12first class indicators and32secondary indicators of the growth environment are finally raised. In the end, each indicator’s weight value is calculated, and the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation models of core competence and growth mechanism are set through fuzzy mathematical methods.5) Combining the relevant evaluation indicators, the qualitative evaluation and comparative analysis of the United States, Britain, Italy, Germany and other developed countries as well as the core competence of the sports industry in China has been carried on. It concludes that the sports industry has strong core competence in the United States, Great Britain, Italy, and Germany; by contrast, the core competence of China’s sports industry is still relatively weak.6) To cultivate and improve the core competence of China’s sports industry, it is required to establish the core competence of construction as the center of the sports industry, to take advantage of the favorable conditions actively, to make efforts to improve the unfavorable environment, and to perfect the core competence of China’s sports industry growth mechanism.
