Classical Style of Writing (CSW) is one of the important parts of Chineselanguage course. However, for a long time there have been serious problems in thecurriculum objectives and curriculum contents of CSW, of which the most distinct oneis that the curriculum objectives and curriculum contents of CSW gradually developinto the learning of the classical language knowledge. As the New Curriculum Reformput into effect, the setting of curriculum standards shows the intention to change thecurrent situation of CSW learning with the description on the curriculum objectivesfrom the classical Chinese, literature and culture, which shows the attempt to integratethe various elements in CSW learning. Nevertheless, the practice of theimplementation of new curriculum proves that the mechanical mixture cannot realizethe genuine integration and is unable to make a substantial change in the curriculumof CSW, which, on the contrary, brings out new problems in the realization ofcurriculum objective. To solve the problem, it’s necessary to have a new reading onthe curriculum orientation, objectives and contents on the basis of the historicaldevelopment of CSW curriculum objective and contents.Seen from the current situation, there are distinct problems both in CSWcurriculums and teaching. Research on CSW curriculums is a hard slog. The researchon the relation between “the language” and “the writing” becomes the hot issue,highlighting the focus of CSW curriculum contents. It is of significance that the callfor reconstruction of CSW curriculum contents gradually stands out. From the presentsituations of CSW instruction, the divergence of Chinese language curriculumstandards and leading outline of NMET brings difficulties to CSW instruction, and itis difficult to implement curriculum standards through Chinese textbooks. The desireto get rid of teaching difficulties calls for new breakthroughs in CSW curriculumobjectives and contents.Having a review on the historical development of the problems in CSWcurriculum objectives and contents will help to solve the current practical problems. During the period of The Republic of China, the learning of classical style writinggradually changed into the learning of classical language. As the rising status ofvernacular, the practical orientation of CSW became the lead, weakening and evenneglecting the particular Cizhang elements of CSW such as structure and composition.From1963, based on the single orientation of “reading ability” in CSW curriculums,the dominant role of the classical language knowledge in CSW curriculum contentswas set up, further narrowing the curriculum contents down into the grammarknowledge of classical language.Since the New Curriculum Reform, the attempt to integrate the classicalChinese, literature and culture becomes the trend. Following this trend, CSWcurriculum should be orientated by culture to construct the curriculum contentsfocusing on “Cizhang,” which asks for CSW Cizhang knowledge absorbed from thetradition and the reconstruction of “Cizhang” in new historical conditions. Thisattempt works hard on the internal integration of the classical Chinese, literature andculture in CSW curriculum objectives, making the possible of construction of the newcontents in CSW curriculum.
