The biggest difference between the mountainous towns and the plain towns is the complex mountainous terrain, the fragile ecological environment and the unique historical context. Specifically, complex terrain created landform elevation, influenced natural mountains and rivers of water distribution and even affect the geology, climate, biological and water environment characteristics of the towns. In addition, in the unique topography and environmental conditions, the historical context of mountainous town is also different from plain town. The concept of "adaptability", as a kind of basic biological phenomena in nature, is a basic biological phenomenon, which is animal and plant adapted to the spontaneous change of the environment. Along with the social development in the 20 th century, some experts and scholars in the field of urban planning aware of the mutually adaptive relation between the artificial environment and the natural environment and begin to introduce the concept of adaptability to the urban form, artificial environment analysis. Then, they form the relevant research results. As a system, symbiotic and dynamic way of thinking, the theory of adaptability consider the relationship of the research object and the environment as a whole, and a long-term continuous process. This concept is same with the analysis process, strategy choice and method ascertain of the mountainous city’s design. Starting with research of the typical pattern of adaptability, this article summarize the existing mountain city design method, wish to open up a new study horizons of mountainous cities space, shape and context.Through the analysis of the full text, first this article constructs a mountainous city design theory based on regional adaptability. Second this article innovate three typical modes of adaptive thinking in urban design of mountainous city from the aspect of theoretical research, i.e. driven adaptation, collaboration adaptation and dynamic adaptation. Last but not least, underling the guidance of this method, the article combs the design elements of mountain city from the "terrain", "environment" and "context", and summarize up the urban design methods as nine kinds of method, which are adapt, use, change, prevent, adjust, ease, protect, inherit and promote. Generally speaking, the article applies the theory of regional adaptability to the urban design of mountainous city, which has practical significance. From the research content, this article can be divided into eight chapters. The first chapter puts forward the research topic. The second chapter is the summary of the practice and theory of the development of urban construction. The third chapter is a reflection on the current situation problem of the modern mountainous cities construction. The fourth chapter is the construction of the theoretical framework of the full text research, which is design theory of mountainous city based on regional adaptability. The fifth, six and seven chapter put forward the design method of adaptability to the terrain, environment and space context in mountain town. Finally, the eighth chapter summarized the research ideas, innovations and shortcomings, and provide the direction for further research.
