| This paper is aimed to research on the morphology evolution of urban industrial space. In the context of the rapid transformation of Chinese cities in recent years, the historical industrial space in those cities have also undergone spatial and cultural transformation in microcosmic level.Referring to the problems of excessive emphasis on materiality space redevelopment, practical demand orientation and insufficient understanding of spatial transform regulation in general research of architectural heritage preservation and adaptive reuse, this paper introduce the “Production of Space” theory and use it as an innovation perspective in this research. The paper chooses Chinese urban historical industrial spaces, which is highly influenced by “Danwei System”,as research objects, analyses the social factors, behavioral agents, value preferences, subject interactions, production modes, from both diachronic and synchronic points of view.Combined with case studies, the paper further analyses and summarizes the revitalization modes and morphology evolution characteristics of Chinese urban historical industrial spaces, and finally deconstructs the phenomenon of the transformation from urban industrial spaces to cultural spaces. The first and second chapters are theoreti cal research parts. The first chapter introduces the basis of this research topic and defin es its scope. After listing series of difficulties could be facing, this chapter elaborates on the research objects and framework. In the second chapter, the paper s ummarizes the interdisciplinary theory and method used in urban spatial research. After systematically organizing theories of space production, this chapter combines interdisciplinary theory with architectural space morphology theory, and further develops them to adopt industrial spaces, finally establish an analytical frame of “Space Production-Morphology Evolution”.In the third and fourth chapters, the paper describes the morphology evolution foundation of Chinese urban historical industrial spaces.Th e third chapter review the history of Chinese modern industrial spaces development, summarizes its historical characteristics, and analyses its political, historical, economic, social and cultural factors. The fourth chapter analyses the causal mechanism o f morphological evolution in the contemporary urban context.By adopting the “structuration theory” from sociology, this chapter makes detailed analysis on both “system” and “actor” factors that affect historical industrial space morphological evolution,a nd then connects social and individual factors with physical form of historical industrial space. The fifth and the sixth chapter start the empirical research. In the fifth chapter, paper classifies and researches on the historical industrial morphology ev olution in different space production modes with the established analytical frame. In this part, space production mode is set as the research clue. The paper chooses particular cases and classifies them in categories such as social processes, social relati ons, value succession, spatial interaction and so on,and then compares their commons and differences in aspects of space layout, space patterns, function components, architecture form and other multiple aspects. The summary of this part lays out different paths and characteristics of historical industrial space morphology evolution. The sixth chapter summarizes the morphology characteristics and its urbanity of the material space from the aspects of external characteristics and environmental image elements, and this part is also the supplementary study on cities and individuals reacting to morphology evolution reaction. The seventh chapter tries to integrate the “Morphology Evolution” and “Space Production” from the conceptual level, proposes to explain the cultural transformation of historical industrial space from the perspectives of dynamics and behaviors. The paper defines it as the response of historical industrial space under the influence of cultural production mechanism. This response on one hand,pr esenteds in microscopic and inner space elements, makes the materiality built-environment,activities,environmental image having a new cultural meaning. On the other hand, presenteds in the macroscopic, external and associated urban spaces, includes the c hanges of capital production modes, the changes of public policies and regulations governance modes,as well as the changes of living order and social network. Finally, the last chapter draws a conclusion to the research of historical industrial space morphology evolution using “Space Production Theory”.It summaries from three aspects, which are the origin and process of the reproduction of historical industrial space, the different modes and characteristics of morphological evolution, and the essence and effect of space cultural transformation. This chapter also points out the limitations of this study, and discusses the content and direction of the follow-up studies. |
