Chinese Contemporary Book Design Research

This study focuses on investigating the vision development and values transformation on style,concept and structure of book design art,along with looking back into the Chinese contemporary history of book design art by arranging,concluding and analyzing the historical materials.Secondly,it does research on the influences of government policies and organization system on designers.Thirdly,it analyzes the relationship between the form language and historical context.Meanwhile,it summarizes the lessons and promotions that foreign design concepts brought to China,by which it concludes the inner factors that have impacts on development and transformation of book design art.This study tries presenting up the complicated image of history to provide paths and methods to understand and transform the local connotation of book design art in current times.During the contemporary history,the concept of book design transformed from 'cover drawings' to 'integrated design' along with restruction and evolution of design values.This study consists of four chapters.The first chapter discusses the books in the 'new China time' when art follow up Yanan tradition by institutionalizing and politicalizing the identity of artists and the book design art came to a strongly spiritual style by relating visual image to political perspectives under a kind of collective creation.The second chapter interprets books in the Cultural Revolution time,revealing the visual features of boilerplate style under political activities,and rethinking the distortion and falling of the values involved.The third chapter presents up the images of book design art in the 80s and 90s from three aspects including inheritance of book design art in the ROC time,impacts by foreign trends on design styles and emergence of researches on design theories,which analyzes the 'Pioneer' and 'Reference' problems in that time.With deeper communication between Chinese and foreign culture,most designers has been influenced by diverse culture.Since the new century,individuation expression has emerged from traditional forms and the styles of design works become diversified and differentiated.It comes to an overview that the design art is neither a kind of derivative from power or likes of social trends,but individual values,emotions and abilities of appreciation which derived from aesthetic edification.The elaborations in this study concerning visual language and design thoughts are virtually reviews and rethinking on relationship among human beings,matters and substances.The sources of the development of design styles,is concerns,comprehensions and acceptances on social culture in different eras.By the above researches,this study tries outline the development and transformation of China's book design art,thereby benefits establishing standards and values of modern book design art.
