A Research On Zhengxuan's Annotation To Disyllabic Words In Zhouli

This dissertation makes the first special exploration to the annotations by the ancient Chinese scholar.Based on the Zhengxuan's annotations in Donghan dynasty to Zhouli,which was an important literature in the period of the Warring States.By means of testing,classified description,statistical analysis and induction,The author argues that ancient Chinese scholar in Donghan dynasty had a clear idea about disyllabic words,and could make a distinction from monosyllabic word in the contents,forms and ways of annotations.The research clarified that the misunderstanding that ancient scholar could not identify the disyllabic words,revealed the differences in annotating monosyllabic words from that of disyllabic ones.Concretely speaking,the author did the following work:1?describing all the disyllabic words in Zhouli.The statistics shows that there are 3359 tokens of disyllabic words and only 3331 types,if the parts of speech are not considered.The author classified these disyllabic words in terms of the grammatical functions,morphology,number of syllables and semantic categories.2?Surveying Zhengxuan's annotations to the disyllabic words in Zhouli.The author explored the reasons why Zhengxuan neglected some words,investigated not only Zhengxuan's view on annotations,but the content,forms and features of annotations.The author calculated that the total tokens of disyllabic words(including those repeated forms)is 7877,among which,2673 tokens(about33.9%)was annotated in a direct or indirect way by Zhengxuan.Of these annotations,1847 tokens were recognized or construed as a whole by Zhengxuan,which was about 69.1% of the total,and the rate of correction on the explanations to Zhengxuan's annotations to the disyllabic words in Zhouli is up to 98%.Such a high figure shows that Zhengxuan had treated its semantic integrity and fixedness as its principal property,and it can also prove that Zhengxuan had a clear idea about such kind of linguistic structure.3?Having surveyed the annotations to the disyllabic words in Zhouli,which quoted from forefather's studies by Zhengxuan.All zhengxuan's idea about disyllabic words in terms of his view,mode of annotations and ways of explanations was inherited from his predecessors' researches,which can be seen from annotations by Du Zi-chun,Zhengxing and ZhengZhong.4?Having systematically summarized Zhengxuan's idea,content,forms,patterns,structures and explaining features of disyllabic words,etc.what distinguished Zhengxuan's annotations from his treatment to monosyllabic words are the following characteristics that are special to explanations to disyllabic words.(1)?contents of annotations: interpretation to the integrative semantic meaning,illumination to the word forms,the imitation to the whole pronunciation of the disyllabic words;(2)?mode of annotations: integrated explanations(not explaining the inner separate structural elements),discrete and integrated annotations(not only the whole word but the inner respective elements).(3)?pattern of annotations : unification of synonymic word;four patterns of whole-and –part explanations:(1)a pattern of whole explanation and a pattern of part explanation;(2)a pattern of whole explanation and several pattern of part explanation;(3)several pattern of whole explanation and a pattern of part explanation;(4)several pattern of whole explanation and several pattern of part explanation.
