Transportation Infrastructure Improvement And Industrial Structure Upgrading

As a kind of social capital,transportation infrastructure not only promotes economic growth by increasing capital stock, expanding domestic demand and promoting employment, but also affects the enterprise productivity, production cost and input structure in the micro-level. Developed transportation network can promote enterprises to develop new markets and reduce production depreciation, and transportation infrastructure can also promote enterprise innovation by improving the agglomeration of innovative resources and the knowledge flow. The current academic research in transportation infrastructure mainly concentrates in the aspects of macro-economic development and the impact of technological progress. How to study regional transportation infrastructure transformation and upgrading of the impact on the industry by theoretical and empirical methods, still has many problems. Empirical study basing on the experience of China still have many deficiencies.Based on this, this paper uses the theory of new economic geography (NEG) as the breakthrough point, and study how improving the traffic infrastructure can promote the upgrading of regional industrial structure. This paper takes Jiangxi Province as the research object, using the China industrial enterprise database in 1998-2007 micro enterprise data as the main data source. At the same time,the technological innovation as the intermediary variable city road accessibility improvement caused by the upgrading of the industrial structure of manufacturing industry, transport accessibility through technical innovation had positive effect on the enterprise, produce regional innovation accumulation effect, and promote the manufacturing industry structure upgrade.According to the theory logic of "transport accessibility - enterprise technology innovation and regional innovation accumulation - manufacturing industry structure upgrading, construct the city transport accessibility index is a new measure of transport costs, and the use of the index on traffic infrastructure impact mechanism of Jiangxi Province manufacturing structure, technological innovation in city area Jiangxi and Jiangxi Province manufacturing Enterprise's technological innovation performance, the 1998-2007 industry in Jiangxi province level, regional level and enterprise level data using instrumental variable estimation, Heckman two stage model for empirical test.The transport accessibility can be very good to describe the transport cost of a region, mechanism of transport accessibility through the "knowledge spillover effects"and "scale effect" can promote the manufacturing enterprise's innovation output and innovation investment, increase traffic to promote enterprise innovation product(new product) and innovation input (R&D funds) to enhance the innovation input and output scale; at the same time, the cumulative effect of traffic can also promote the manufacturing enterprises in the region innovation, transport accessibility level is higher,and the proportion of area innovation output may also become more prominent; the transport accessibility level and manufacturing structure analysis also confirmed that the transport accessibility can significantly promote the upgrading of manufacturing structure.
