In recent years, the global value chain division model characterized by international production division has become a prominent feature and trend of the world economy. The focus of industrial competition among countries has shifted from scale competition to trade value-added competition. At the same time, although China's manufacturing industry has rapidly expanded into the global value chain with low-cost factors such as labor and resources,it has achieved significant scale expansion, the added value acquisition ability of most manufacturing industries is low.As emerging economies with lower production costs are embedded in the global value chain, some manufacturing industries are facing the risk of being squeezed out of global value chains.Industrial upgrading has become the key to solving the above problems.Vigorously strengthening technological innovation to improve the quality and efficiency of industrial development becomes an important breakthrough in the upgrading of China's manufacturing industry. What role does technological innovation play as an advanced production factor for industrial upgrading? Is there a difference in different industries? Which industry should be paid more attention to in terms of upgrading? These are the questions that this thesis needs to discuss.First of all, this thesis combs the relevant literature research results and theoretical basis.Summarizing the technical innovation, industrial upgrading, global value chain and comparative advantage theories and related literature research results provides theoretical guidance for this thesis.Secondly, this thesis analyzes the status quo of China's manufacturing technology innovation and industrial development. This thesis divides 15 manufacturing industries into technology-intensive manufacturing and non-technology-intensive manufacturing. This thesis analyzes the current status of technological innovation input and output of manufacturing industry in 2005-2014,the global value chain status index of the whole and sub-sectors,global value chain participation index status of the overall and sub-industry,founding that(1)although the strength of China's manufacturing technology innovation has been strengthened, but there is still a big gap compared with developed countries;(2)there is a phenomenon that the global value chain status of technology-intensive manufacturing is not as good as that of non-technology-intensive manufacturing;(3)The global value chain participation of non-technology-intensive manufacturing is not as good as that of emerging economies,non-technology-intensive manufacturing facing the risk of being squeezed out of global value chains. Then, this thesis explores the mechanism of technological innovation affecting industrial upgrading and explains the mechanism of the impact of technological innovation on industrial upgrading from the two dimensions of supply and demand. In terms of supply, technological innovation plays an important role in industrial upgrading by optimizing production process, improving factor utilization efficiency and promoting the transformation of leading factors. In terms of demand, technological innovation is used for industrial upgrading through the promotion of production demand and consumer demand.Next,in the perspective of global value chain, the KPWW method is used to measure the global value chain status of various sectors of manufacturing in 2005-2014,based on the purpose of embedded high-end,this thesis does empirical research on the different impact of technological innovation input and innovation output on the upgrading of two types of industries, based on the purpose of preventing being squeezed out of global value chains by emerging economies, this thesis uses DEA method to measure the efficiency of upgrading of different industries. The empirical results show that(1)technological innovation input has a greater impact on industrial upgrading of non-technology-intensive manufacturing industry, and technological innovation output has a greater impact on upgrading of technology-intensive manufacturing industry;(2)In order to upgrade efficiently,non-technology-intensive manufacturing upgrading should be paid more attention to.On the basis of theoretical and empirical analysis, this thesis gives corresponding policy recommendations to guide China's manufacturing industry upgrade from two levels of government and enterprises. The innovation of this thesis is as follows.Compared with the previous industrial upgrading, which emphasizes the ratio of different industries' GDP,the research of this thesis analyzes industrial upgrading from the perspective of global value chain, and the value-added ability of each industry is paid more attention to.In addition, when exploring the impact of technological innovation on the upgrading of manufacturing industry, the research object of this thesis is further refined, and the impact of technological innovation input and output on industrial upgrading of manufacturing sub-sectors is studied.
