The relationship between painting and architecture has been intimate.Since the Linguistic Turn in the 20 th century, studying painting and architecture from linguistic perspective is a trend as well as a need. The linguistic perspective helped to study the inspirations from painting for architecture beyond the constraint of form and explore the connections between painting and architecture at the semantic level.Study the common semantic type and the expressive approaches between them can balance instrumental rationality and aesthetical emotions, feelings and thought, images and ideas. The semantic connotations and features of painting and architecture can be concluded by studied the intrinsic characteristics of language and the natural property of art language.During the period of painting semantics deeply influenced architecture, discussed the inspirations from the connotations of painting language and their changing laws mainly lied in the picturesque, modern abstract painting and post-modern painting. The Picturesque distinguished a kind of new aesthetic connotation from classical painting in the past: picturesque beauty.Differentiated from natural beauty, picturesque beauty emerged in the process of retrospecting the images represented in paintings;it focused on visual sensation rather than the idea within the verbal language.Modern abstract painting also concentrated on visual quality.Furthermore,it detached the idea about things from painting and stressed the autonomy of image.Post-modern painting refilled the outside connotations of text into painting and added a historical review to the forward conscious of time of modernity.Besides these,it brought the narrative elements into semantic connotations, such as the context, the author and the power discourses.During these periods, the works of painting presented two types of semantics: one was the semantics of image expressed by ?shown?;the other was the semantics of idea which was conveyed by ?said?.Both the connotations of these two semantic styles greatly affected the semantic connotation of architecture in the corresponding period and changed its expressive ways. The two semantics of architecture were based on two different kinds of knowledge: intuition and reason.Knowledge of intuition was understood by the image which included not only visual forms but also impression from complex experience and internalized image from unconscious traces.Knowledge of reason was seized mostly by logic thinking in human idea and verbal language.Their relationship was sensation and perception,a kind of parallel relationship. Both general language and art language had these two types of semantics: image semantics and idea semantics.Referring to the semantic expression of language and art language, further with the semantic connotations and their generating approaches,a parallel architectural language model can be proposed. This theoretical model focused on the semantic level. It emphasized parallelly expressing these two types of semantic connotations. The model helped to balance aesthetical feelings and scientific technology, humanistic concern and rational pursuing, spiritual experience and logic thinking, and became a complement for the semantic logic of ?function-form? and meaning orientated.
