Urban spatial identity is the core content of creating distinctive urban images,which has important research value and significance.However,with the rapid urbanization process in China,especially in recent 40 years,identity crisis has become a common and serious issue.Concerning this issue,many scholars have conducted a series productive researches.Some scholars focused on the discussion of urban identity's concept,composition,value,or visual aesthetic attributes,with quality analysis preference.The others attempt to make the research from the evaluation perspective,such as public surveys,resource competitiveness evaluations and so on.However,neither is effective in solving the issue.Because it pays too much attention to the material space attribute of urban spatial identities,and fails to deeply explore the relationship between urban spatial identities and the public from the perspective of environmental image,resulting in the long-term dependence of urban spatial characteristic planning on the subjective form creation of planners,which is divorced from the perception and experience of the public.Thus,how to accurately grasp the scientific connotation of urban spatial identities,clarify the relationship between urban spatial identities and people,establish a scientific and reasonable evaluation method,and then contribute to guide the corresponding urban planning and design project,is a significant topic in the current urban identity research.Based on that,from vision-activity interaction perspective,a multi-dimensional and multi-level quantitative evaluation method is established,with full consideration of public visual and activity factors.While fitting the public perception and experience process by quantitative methods,it provides the basis for specific planning and design decisions.First,with the theories of urban and rural planning,psychology and environmental behavior,the concept of interaction is introduced,and the behavior-place orientation of urban spatial identity has been redefined.The interactive principle of urban spatial identity is explained through three processes(supply,experience and response),and the two basic analysis dimensions of urban spatial identity(vision and activity)are established.Second,from the perspective of human visual and activity characteristics,with the logical order from the initial stage to the deep,from the representation to the mechanism,five core factors in the process of perceiving and experiencing urban spatial identities are clarified.It includes recognizability,esthetic,paraphrasability,vitality and activity support.Based on that,the new quantitative analysis method is proposed,with 5 primary indicators(visual sensitivity,scenic beauty,paraphrasability,vitality,activity support).The multi-dimensional and multi-level comprehensive evaluation model of the urban spatial identity is built to overcome the problems of systematic deficiency,single data source or difficult to quantify indicators in the existing urban identity evaluation research.Finally,the evaluation method is applied and verified by taking wuhan city as an example.The main innovation points include:(1)Conducting interdisciplinary research,it is the first time to introduce the concept of interaction to redefine and interpret the urban spatial identity.Three processes,two dimensions and five factors of urban spatial identity interaction are proposed.(2)The traditional evaluation methods are improved.Based primarily on public vision and activities,the new quantitative analysis method is proposed,including 5 primary indicators(visual sensitivity,scenic beauty,paraphrasability,vitality,activity support)and 22 secondary indicators.It fits the public's real perception and experience of urban spatial identity.(3)The factor system,analytic hierarchy process and GIS platform are introduced into the evaluation model of urban spatial identity,and the evaluation indexes of different dimensions and levels are integrated to achieve the comprehensive evaluation of urban spatial identity for the first time.(4)Through the whole process of urban design including evaluation,positioning,planning,guidance and control,the research and exploration of urban spatial identity evaluation supporting planning and design decision is carried out with the case of Wuhan.The full context contains about 116,000 words and 134 charts.
