The modern Chinese collegiate art education is established on basis of the education mode in western painting, which makes a great influence on modern and contemporary Chinese art.Since the Republic of China, the debate concentrating on“traditional and modern”,“advanced and backward”,“westernization and nationalization”development of Chinese art has lasted for one hundred years and reached no agreement. The root cause is that there is something wrong with the position of modern and contemporary Chinese art education.Chinese painting and western painting are totally different systems.Chinese painting art is the crystallization of national culture and aesthetic psychology, containing rich traditional philosophy thoughts. The Yin and Yang of Chinese traditional philosophy is not only the explanation of Taoists by the ancients, but also the way of observing and experiencing the nature. This unique way of observing the nature determines that the Chinese art is focus on entirety from the beginning, involving the core and essence, but not be confined to depicting the details to be“similar in form”.Supported by the whole sociology,it emphasizes the expression of verve and poetic spirit, thus forming the“freehand brushwork in traditional Chinese painting”.While the western painting is supported by science and advocates the true expression of matter, leading to the focus on realism in art, thus forming the western“realistic”art tradition. The different art traditions of the East and the West decide the different art education modes. The traditional Chinese painting education has always paid great attention to the inheritance of teachers and students and the inheritance and study of ancient classics.By imitating the classics, the artists could master the expressive technique, forms and patterns of Chinese ink painting. Then, they imitated the nature and pursued further studies on the grounds of teacher's guidance, gain the source of heart, and finally realize the personalized expression and innovation.“Imitate the tradition-pursue further studies-gain the source of heart”is not only the basic path of the growth of traditional artists, but also the unique national education system established on basis of“freehand”artistic rules. Before the 18 th century, the western painting education took imitation to be“realistic”as the goal, took realistic representation of the nature just like reflecting like a mirror as the standard of art, established academic formative education mode based on the imitation theory of ancient Greece, and gradually formed the“realistic”art education system. In view of the vulnerable Chinese economy since the 20 th century, western methods have been introduced.Although there are different explorations in the art education system in China, the collegiate education in Republic of China and New China mainly adopted the western education mode or the combination of Chinese and western education mode, and the traditional education mode has been marginalized or totally abandoned, which is worthy of deep reflection. In this paper,Qi Baishi is selected as the case of traditional art education, which is intended to sort and summarize the methods and rules always following in the traditional art education in China through studying Qi Baishi's artistic growth and artistic achievements and comparison with contemporary art education. In history, many education models got success just because they were deeply rooted in the profound cultural soil of our nation. As a folk painter,Qi Baishi grew up completely receiving the traditional art education.Qi Baishi accomplished the breakthrough of the brush and ink patterns, original creation on pattern, ink and brush with his own cognition tendency.Qi Baishi completed the transformation and innovation based on the traditional freehand brushwork thus creating the peak of literati painting in the20~thh century. From Qi Baishi's art achievement we can see,an artist not influenced by the western education and completely out of touch with the western academic education system, not only can make a huge success in the Chinese traditional education path and create dazzling light of national art,but also can make a profound impact on the world art.Qi Baishi's great achievement in freehand painting not only proves that the Chinese traditional education model has infinite possibilities, but also proves the necessity and possibility of inheriting and creating of the Chinese art road of“Imitate the tradition-pursue further studies-gain the source of heart”.This road is one of the indispensable important forms in contemporary China where many art forms coexist. It is dominated by the education mode—the art law of freehand brushwork that is the most difficult in the art field. It is an art education model best fitting the art law of freehand painting which is most difficult in various forms, the cultural position which Chinese modern art education must follow with, and it is also the irreplaceable and most characteristic one in diversified art education.Seeing the study on Qi Baishi is very comprehensive in the academic circle, this paper focuses on his growth process,so as to find out the universal significance of the growth cases receiving the Chinese traditional education. It provides new perspectives and contents in concerning and exploring the laws of local art for Chinese art education,so as to survive and develop the model of historical and world significance for Chinese indigenous art with a civilization of 5,000 years(8,000 years). Thus, the multi-style and multi-mode ecological law can be enriched in the era of global integration.Qi Baishi's model is not unique, but irreplaceable. It has been ignored but should not be ignored. This plays an important role in the new era of emphasizing cultural confidence.
