The orchestral work Drei Orchesterstucke,composed by the Austrian contemporary composer Friedrich Cerha in 2006,is the subject of this research.Firstly,the research focused on composition techniques of the work.By analyzing the pitch arrangement,rhythm structure,texture form and music structure,the forming process and organizing methods of Cerha's personalized musical language was explored.Secondly,the composition techniques were combined with humanistic ideas of the work,in hope to pry into Cerha's composition concept and aesthetic ideology.Finally,the work was compared with some preceding works,combined with the trend of music development in the 20th century Europe,the variation of Cerha's artistic ideas and its inevitability was discussed.The thesis was composed of three parts.The first part is Introduction and Chapter 1.Introduction including the reason of the selection of this topic and its meaning,and the related research status.Chapter 1 briefly introduced the Cerha's life,periods of creation and different styles in different creation stages,on which the in-depth study of Drei Orchesterstucke was based.The second part including Chapter 2 to Chapter 5,in which the composition techniques of Drei Orchesterstucke was analyzed as a whole.Four aspects of the work,pitch arrangement,rhythm structure,texture form and music structure,were chosen to be analyzed and discussed in detail.The analysis shows Cerha's emphasis on a diversified composition idea.After effectively absorbing multiple traditional and contemporary composition techniques,he explored actively into a personalized musical language.By using the expression of emotion as a bonding point,he composed three movement with different musical expression but integral at a higher level of artistic conception and spiritual content.Chapter 6 is the third part,in which the artistic idea of the Drei Orchesterstzucke is discussed.In the last chapter,the change of Cerha's composition ideas,expressed by this work,was discussed by the analysis method of comparing.Furthermore,the discussion was placed in the musical content of 20th century,therefore the process of the change and its essence was reflected.From the discussion,the essence of the regression trend that beginning at 1960s is not intended to change all music into traditional music,but to re-discover and re-shape the tradition in a new angle of view.Thus,a new era value could be given to music,which is a spiral rising circulation of development.In the epilogue of the thesis,by extracting three groups of keywords form techniques,ideas and artistic styles,the composition characteristic of the Drei Orchesterstucke and its meaning to contemporary music was concluded.
