The focus of this paper is the novel creation by Chinese immigrants using Chinese as the medium since the mid-19 th century, reflecting the life and emotional experience of Chinese immigrants in North America.A survey of the Chinese immigrant novels in North America shows that the pursuit of cultural identity has been expressed in motifs of original hometown imagination, historical memory, interracial communication, and intergenerational relations. The study methods of this paper include intensive reading, comparative research and cultural research, using theories of cultural identity, imageology and sociology to analyze the presentation mode, characteristics and causes of identity in the Chinese immigrant novels of North America in different historical periods in the context of heterogeneous culture in the above four levels, systematic exploration and display of the imagination and actual choices of Chinese immigrants in North America between Chinese and Western cultures. The reason of choosing this subject is mainly based on the following two aspects: Firstly, identity is always in the process of construction and always points to the future.Due to the different social, cultural and political contexts of different writers, the expressions of cultural identity vary.It is endowed with different connotations with changing historical context. Therefore, the study of cultural identity is always a “product”(by Stuart Hall)that will not be completed, just like cultural identity.Cultural identity is a very meaningful topic for both present and future researchers.Secondly, there are problems in the current research. The writing process of Chinese immigrant novels in North America has a history of nearly two hundred years, however, the research on their cultural identity mainly focuses on the works of new immigrant writers.Regionally, more attention is paid to the United States than Canada, which is not conducive to the overall grasp of the research objects. In view of the current deficiencies in this research field, this paper gives vertical research on development of North American immigrant novels for more than 100 years.Through analysis of above four typical themes, this paper is trying to systematically excavate and display the unique cultural identity, thus to break the imbalance of the research objects and research regions.Cultural identity implies the special ethnic diaspora experience of Chinese immigrants in North America. It is the product of cultural integration of Chinese culture and Western culture. With the rise and fall of power discourse between China and the West in different historical times, the cultural identity of Chinese immigrants in North America displayed in literature has gone through continuous construction. The changes of identity is an important way for us to understand not only North American Chinese community unique living situations in different periods in the cross-cultural space, but also the development track of the immigrant novels created on this basis.Meanwhile, the development of this region's literature in more than 100 years has always been consistent with China's modernization reform. The confusions and choices of self-identity faced by Chinese immigrants in North America have largely become a metaphor of the fate of national culture in the process of China's modernization.Analyzing and grasping this metaphor is inspirational to the adjustments of China's stance and strategy in cultural exchange between the East and the West.Particularly,in the context of globalization, cultural exchanges and interactions between countries and nations are becoming more intense and frequent.Today's plural mixing world culture indicates that the pursuit and construction of cultural identity are topics unavoidable for everyone.
