Education is an activity of cultivating people,and the primary purpose of university education is undoubtedly the development of people.However,due to the development of the students' mental age,the development of the students in different stages reflects different characteristics.Before the appearance of the university,we focus on the care and upbringing of students,pay attention to the cultivation of students' learning,focus on helping students to seek independence in spirit and personality,pay attention to the knowledge and understanding of some basic concepts,but after entering into the university,the mental development of the most students is mature,what they need is the mastery of the principles and the use of them,because of its own particularity,through the deep and spiritual academic research,the development of human intelligence and the cultivation of the moral world with others to form the “shaping human nature” character.Since the industrial revolution,in order to meet the needs of the development of the country and the society,the university has set up a kind of professional education to adapt to the market.With the rise of utilitarianism and scientism,the professional education has gradually occupied the dominant position in university education,but the education on the development of human being is ignored gradually.They are embodied in the university,that is to say,paying too much attention to the needs of the market,out of human value;the separation of the discipline of the university,the refinement of the professional,the university only emphasis on imparting knowledge and skills,ignoring the overall development of people;the university pays too much attention to the professional education,deviating from the purpose of human development;at present,the evaluation mechanism of the performance doctrine is out of liberal education,which makes it impossible for a person to be a person.The university in such an entertainment,consumerism society,it is enslaved to the market worship and technological development outside and which is enslaved to threaten of the professionalism,occupation and doctrine of utilitarianism and instrumentalism inside.The university gradually separated from its original mission and became a vocational training institute.But the human is the self-consciousness,is the development of me,is constantly beyond me,naturally has the beauty and freedom,as well as the growing demand for talent in today's society,people can not meet the needs of the development of society and the country,the university education should not only pay attention to the development and improvement of students “ability”,but also pay attention to the “shaping human nature” character.Through the historical investigation of the concept of “shaping human nature” between the Chinese university and the western university,we find that whether the free education's purpose is to cultivate the free man of western university or “the way of cultivating the personality” in Chinese ancient higher education,they all regard the development of human being as the most important purpose,and pay attention to the development of the intellectual and moral,and hope that students can become free man or saints.Thus,we can conclude that the “shaping human nature” character of the university is to make students believe that they have the unlimited potential for upward development,whether it is in terms of wisdom or virtue,there is no possibility,because every student can be who he wants to be.For this reason,in addition to the “shaping human nature” idea of the university,it should carry out the idea,which is how the university should be “shaping human nature”? The “shaping human nature” idea reflects the functions of university.As for the teaching,it should change the traditional content of imparting knowledge and skills to the development of human intelligence;as for the scientific research,it should encourage students to participate in these activities actively and develop their thinking ability;as for the social service,it should be “shaping human nature” in society;as for the cultural inheritance and innovation,it should be “shaping human nature” in civilization.These four functions are not isolated,not linked,but mutual integration;only by working together can they make it possible for the university to achieve the purpose of “shaping human nature”.On the theoretical possibility,the university in the specific management should provide the students with “shaping human nature” to create or provide good environmental support.Universities should fully realize their own uniqueness,recognize that freedom and science is the core concepts of the university.For this reason,university management should adhere to the principle of academic freedom and human centered,need to have a clear idea that the concept of talent is the main body of the university principal,and the university needs to have the fine school spirit,the harmonious interpersonal environment,the humanity campus construction environment as well as the energetic and the fervor extracurricular activity environment,because these are the essential parts of “shaping human nature”.Universities are playing an increasingly important role in the real life world,if a university wants to maximize its value;it must always keep its own mission in mind,know what to do and what not to do,only with the “shaping human nature” as the foundation,the university can set the root for itself.
