The Construction Of Female Role In The Perspective Of Media

During the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China,as the largest Protestant publishing house in China,the Christian Literature Society for China founded the Womens Messenger in April 1912 for the upper-middle-educated family women and female students in order to enlighten them with new knowledge.Based on the Christian guiding principles,this magazine focuses on women's housekeeping management,child rearing,marriage,education,occupation,rights and social services and other related issues,giving women all-round guidance and help.The Womens Messenger which was issued nearly 40 years is the product of mutual adaptation and selection with the times.The articles it published are sometimes conservative,sometimes extreme,sometimes radical,and sometimes repeated.The intricate emotional positioning of female role exactly shows the difficulty and complexity of the construction of female role in the Republic of China.In terms of the publishing tone,the Women's Messenger chose a moderate and conservative"new" way for the positioning of female role in the Republic of China,trying to achieve an orderly transition and balance between cultivating a new type of good wife and good mother" and new social women.This balance reflects the fusion degree between tradition and modernity in the transformation of modern China.In nearly forty-year publication,although the Women's Messenger always focuses on the family,its efforts and attempts to guide,regulate and deal with the balance of female family role and social role will help to promote the process of scientific housekeeping and social modernization.Therefore,by interpreting the Women's Messenger,this thesis intends to use"female role" as a connection to explore the close relationship between the social and historical changes and the media in the Republic of China,and fully explain the functional connotations and times characteristics of female family role and social role,and make a theoretical analysis of the balance of the two roles.The study on the construction course of female role can not only reflects the social expectation and positioning of female role in the Republic of China,but also reveals the self-reflection and self-express of women represented by the female intellectual group,highlighting the historical transformation of female role that they take the initiative to appeal instead of passively being advocated by social male elites.
