Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation examines the phenomena of television music, as distinct from "music television," in relation to the concept of "musical travel." This concept refers to popular music and musical formats that are re-purposed and moved across multiple media platforms, and considers how spatial and temporal locations and shifts are used to implement specific industrial strategies and pursue cultural and economic goals. While this study examines the cultural meanings and politics behind the movements of music within television environments, it also emphasizes the media industries' role in relation to these "musical moves" thereby providing an integrated critical perspective that connects televisual aesthetics, technological developments, and consumer behavior with industrial history.
