This study examined whether demonstrated academic excellence as evidenced by police recruits in the police academy was predictive of future police promotion. The academic standing in the police academy of 94 officers was compared to their promotional examinations over a 15 year period. Data was analyzed through bivariate correlational, stepwise multiple regression, and chi-square analysis techniques.; Officers who demonstrated academic excellence in the police academy obtained statistically significant greater numbers of promotions over their careers. Pre-existing educational levels of officers influenced both academy scores as well as promotional scores, and was seen as a key variable in this research. Oral interview skills were also seen as an important predictor variable of the police promotional process. |
