Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this dissertation was to develop a preventative program called the Perils of Perfection Program for couples regarding the interpersonal impact of perfectionism. Most existing programs about perfectionism have been designed around the intrapersonal aspects of this construct. A growing body of literature on perfectionism has focused on the interpersonal experience of perfectionism, but no programs have been developed to address this new area in the literature base. The program design found in the preventative relationship intervention literature appeared to provide the ideal format by which to develop a program addressing the interpersonal impact of perfectionism. The Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program (PREP) is one of the most widely researched preventative programs and has the strongest efficacy of the available preventative relationship programs (Halford & Moore, 2002). As such, PREP was the program by which this dissertation was modeled.;The Perils of Perfection Program consists of four, two-hour long, seminars to be conducted by a trained professional. A feedback session with two couples was held during the development of the final program curriculum for this dissertation. The ultimate goal of the Perils of Perfection Program is to prevent future negative outcomes for relationships, such as interpersonal dysfunction, through education and skills trainings on the interpersonal impact of perfectionism.
