Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a multimedia ESP module, created with the ADDIE instructional system design model, on the learning performance of essential hotel terminology of 68 hotel sophomores at a private technical college in Taipei and the effect of the multimedia ESP module on the participants' perceived self-efficacy in accomplishing specific tasks related to the terminology taught. A quasi-experimental research design was used. The participants were students from two intact class sessions assigned as the experimental and the control groups with the experimental group receiving instruction using the multimedia ESP module and the control group receiving traditional instruction using printed text materials. Both groups took an essential hotel terminology pretest and perceived self-efficacy pre-survey prior to the instruction. The same test and survey instruments were administered again to both groups as the posttest and the post-survey after the completion of the instruction. The findings demonstrated significantly better academic performance as well as higher perceived self-efficacy as a result of using the multimedia ESP instructional module when compared to the printed text materials used in traditional instruction. Recommendations for ESP practitioners in Taiwan included applying instructional system design, which incorporates computer technology, to effectively facilitate their Hotel English instruction.
