Abstract/Summary:
Given the recent rapid growth of the female prison population, effective interventions are now necessary to reduce the cycle of criminal behavior for this population. Although reintegration programs are increasingly common, a need for more gender-specific and gender-sensitive programming still exists. One aspect consistently absent from these developing programs, whether focused on life skills or emotional functioning, is a segment on money management Financial management skills are essential in daily life, from running a household to making ends meet. In addition, these skills may increase self-esteem, self-efficacy, and reduce familial risk factors (such as child abuse, domestic violence, and child behavioral problems). In the increasing role of psychologists, especially taking into account a systemic viewpoint, financial issues can have a negative or positive effect on the psychological health of families. The current program development seeks to create a module to address these needs, including: basic money management skills, avoiding financial problems, and examining relationships to money. This program would serve as an add-on to existing reintegration and rehabilitative programming.
