Abstract/Summary:
This study describes teachers' EFL reading PCK to explore the characteristics and the nature of secondary school teachers' PCK for teaching EFL reading, and to find out the sources of secondary teachers' EFL reading PCK in the context of Mainland China.;The study adopted a case study methodology, for the in-depth description of teachers' EFL reading PCK in senior high schools and its sources was the purpose. Six secondary English teachers of three schools in Shenzhen, Mainland China were chosen to participate in the current study. There are several sub-components of knowledge of EFL reading curricula, knowledge of strategies of teaching EFL reading, and knowledge of assessment of students' learning.;Teachers' knowledge of selection of reading texts, selection of instructional languages, assessment methods, assessment dimensions, and students' EFL reading learning are found to be similar across cases. Their knowledge of EFL reading teaching goals, organization of EFL reading teaching, selection of teaching contents, and selection of teaching activities are found to be different from case to case.;Teachers' teaching experience, English learning experience, and professional collaboration are found to be sources of EFL reading PCK. Besides, EFL reading PCK is also found to be transformed from teachers' knowledge of University Entrance Examination, which is identified as a new source of EFL reading PCK.;The nature of EFL reading PCK is discussed in the current study. It concludes that it is a blend of practical knowledge and formal knowledge, that it is a mixture, and that foreign language PCK, unlike science PCK, is not subject-matter-specific.
