Abstract/Summary:
An extended career or working through planned retirement, may assist baby boomers in recapturing financial losses experienced from the U.S. retirement market between 2007 and 2008. Job security, enhanced by adding value to an organization through competent performance, is an important link to the success of an extended career. Hence, baby boomers either wanting or needing to extend their productive, financially rewarding career will need the most current competencies required by their field. While there is no evidence that human resource (HR) professionals are less prepared to retire than baby boomer professionals in other industries, evidence does exist in the HR industry that incompetence has already jeopardized baby boomer careers and that the opportunity to continue a career for this group, much less extend it, may be minimal. Research studies in the HR industry indicate that performance competence of HR baby boomers has not progressed in relation to expectations of organizational leaders. A review of literature reveals differentiation in views of competent HR performance between business leaders and HR practitioners. This study expands HR competency research by exploring the correlations between recent findings and the perception of HR professionals from the baby boomer generation regarding current HR performance.
