Abstract/Summary:
Healthcare has seen the emergence of computer technology in all aspects of the delivery of patient care. The purpose of the research study was to explore the lived experience of experienced nurses who are using computerization in practice. The research was entrenched in the philosophical underpinnings of phenomenology and theoretical framework of Bandura and King. The researcher explored the lived experiences of 14 experienced nurses using computerization in practice. Data were collected from demographic questionnaires, field notes, and face-to-face, unstructured interviews with the experienced nurses. A 7-step data analysis method was used to illustrate and understand the "meaning" and "essence" of the lived experience of the experienced nurses working in an acute care hospital in various specialties. The unstructured interview format allowed both the experienced nurses to share their lived experiences using computerization in practice and the researcher to use follow-up questions to gain full insight into what was shared. Significant statements were formulated into meanings and themes. The experienced nurses shared their experiences about computerization in practice as they related to their experience, emotional feelings, training, accuracy, timeliness, safety, learning, documentation, and support. The findings showed that the nurses, when faced with the reality of having to use computerization in practice, believed that as experienced practitioners, they were adaptable and the goal was safety in patient care.
