Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between leisure motivations and leisure constraints of students from seven colleges in Pingtung County, Taiwan. Also explored were the relationships between demographic variables and leisure motivations and constraints of college students. From a random sample of 800 students, valid questionnaires were received from 757 subjects for a response rate of 94.63 percent. Respondents were administered an instrument consisting of the Leisure Motivation Questionnaire, the Leisure Constraint Scale and a demographic questionnaire. The results of this study indicated the highest mean of leisure motivation among the six factors is 'physical and mental relaxation' and the highest mean of leisure constraint among the seven factors is 'work aspect.' The statistical analysis revealed significant differences existed between male and female college students' leisure motivations for 'health and fitness need.' In the factors 'need of achievement,' and 'intellectual need' of leisure motivation of college students those with major study in Medicine were stronger than those with major study in Business and Management. The statistical results revealed no significant differences existed between male and female college students' leisure constraints. Factors of 'environment condition,' 'limited oneself,' 'individual psychology,' 'family aspect' and 'economic aspect' in leisure constraints can be predicted by factors for 'health and fitness need' in leisure motivation.;It is important for these students, who will be the supervisors and leaders of tomorrow, by virtue of their higher education, to manage their time and lifestyles as they relate to leisure.
