Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to develop a method book for the systematic teaching of four tuning systems aurally using as a guide the phenomenon variously called "combination," "difference," "Tartini," or "resultant" tones. The four tuning systems covered are Pythagorean, Just, One-quarter Comma Meantone, and Equal Temperament. The method is designed for the college freshman or advanced high school student level individual who has an understanding of interval spellings. The study includes a historical examination of tuning, the history and explanations of the phenomenon of combination tones, and discussion of the strategies used in developing the method book. Two versions of the method book itself appear as appendices, a treble and a bass clef version, each providing exercises in various ratios applied to each interval.
