The effects of perceived coach leadership behavior upon team cohesion and performance for Taiwanese college basketball teams

Abstract/Summary:
The study examines the effects of leadership behaviors on team cohesion and team performance in Taiwanese College basketball. Teams from conference A1 and first 13 teams of conference A2 of 2001--2002 season participated in the study. Subjects included 23 coaches and 285 players. Dimensions of leadership behaviors and team cohesions were measured through LSS and GEQ. Descriptive analysis was used to analyze leadership behaviors from both teams. Coaches from both conferences identified specific traits in leadership behaviors. The result of Pearson correlation found that both of conferences had a significant relation between leadership behaviors and team cohesion whereas one-way Anova reveled that leadership behaviors of both conferences had significant influence on performance. In addition, the result of the study also identified the team performance of both conferences could be predicted from leadership behaviors and team cohesion through multiple regression. Manova was used to compare leadership behaviors of coaches and t-test was used to compare team cohesion between A1 and A2 conference. The results showed no significant differences in leadership behaviors and team cohesions between conference A1 and A2. The results were discussed in details and the recommendations and application of the study were made to Taiwanese college basketball coaches.
