Abstract/Summary:
The vice president for administrative services (VPAS) in a college or university is the key mid-manager who gives an integrated leadership and support for the various departments that constitute administrative services. These departments usually are institutional planning, space management, management information systems, risk management, personnel management, fiscal management, security and campus police.;A typical VPAS in the United States has college education, fifty percent of the 184 surveyed had masters degrees while about 24.0% had doctorates. It was found that 88% were male, with the mean age of 49.9 years, and the mean annual salary of ;Their greatest area of administrative difficulty was making decisions on dismissal, the budget, and legal issues. They found that working with their various constituencies was relatively easy. Approximately 71% did not aspire for any other career change. A new VPAS is likely to be advised to be committed to the best goals of the institution, hire good people, and delegate duties with authority. Success will depend to a great extent on the amount of appropriate energy, leadership and management skills demonstrated by the VPAS. The ability to use humor appropriately, to be a good listener, and an effective communicator are necessary for an administrator like the VPAS.
