| Scope and Method of Study. The purpose of this study was to make an analysis of selected college and university administrative functions of departments of physical education and characteristics of administrators. The research was divided into two aspects: The functions of the administration, and the characteristics of the administrators. The questionnaire was developed from a review of the literature and by assistance of the researcher's committee. The survey was sent to a random sample of 90 institutions where administrators belong to the college or university Administration Council of the Administrator Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dancing (HYPERD). Sixty responses were received. The percentage of frequency of the responses was computed in addition to the mean score of the percentiles.;Findings and Conclusions. Sixty two percent of the administrators strongly agreed on budgeting as a function of administration; 97.22 percent of the responders strongly agreed that communication is a function of administration. Also, they agreed on organization function by 86.95 percent. Ninety-eight and five hundreds percent of the administrators agreed that good staff relations was a function of administration; 81.68 percent agree on programming as a function of administration. Also, 89.45 percent agreed that evaluation was a function of administration. By 74.80 percent, the administrators agreed on the integrity, ability to make decisions, leadership ability, ability to instill good human relations, ability to admit weaknesses and mistakes, and ability to maintain an open, positive working relationship with students as primary characteristics of an administrator. |
