Abstract/Summary:
Rapid evolving technologies become challenges for educational institutions, however new practices from effective educators are vital for schools and district leaders to have a vision and well-defined goals when utilizing and implementing technology. The purpose of the qualitative research study with a narrative inquiry design was to capture the stories and in-depth experiences of middle school educator's social networking influences on professional socialization. Waugman and Lohrer (2000) define professional socialization as "the process whereby persons internalize behavior norms and standards and for a sense of identity and commitment to a professional field" (p.6). Data collected using semi-structured interview questions reflective of middle school educator's experiences through a thematic analysis. The purpose in analysis develops an understanding of social networking influences on professional socialization. The data analysis research findings emerged three themes from participant responses: (a) attitudes and perceptions about professional socialization; (b) Integrating technology and social networking; and (c) socialization and social development process. Subthemes also emerged from the data about middle school educator's networking professional connections, career and technical development, and communication and social skills. The three themes associated with subthemes led to suggestions for leadership for improvements. Future research is necessary to assist educational leaders to create new strategies to contribute and foster different uses of social networking platforms to improve professional socialization, facilitate support in the development and appropriate use of social networking in professional socialization.
