The study of a single ethnic group of people is an essential part of ethnic historical study. It is focusing on thoroughly observing and exploring the life of a single ethnic people in terms of politics, economy, cultures and society. Through profound analysis on all the parts of a single ethnic people's life, the socialism of this ethnic people is presented and its role and function are highlighted.The dissertation mainly studies the single ethnic people of Gelao. Led by the current distribution situation of Gelao, the research initially discusses its general distribution in the two dynasties of Ming and Qing, exploring the reasons of Gelao's distribution and its changes, and the challenges of merging from outside, by which the internal changes of Gelao have been triggered, through comparing the evolution of Gelao's distribution in the two Dynasties. In the process of discussion, the driving forces of Gelao's distribution are discovered.Due to few research into the distribution of Gelao people at home or aboard, seldom any detailed documentation concerning this field is available.The dissertation unfolds the new picture of study on Gelao's distribution, it has some academic significance. The dissertation is divided into 7 sections:The first section is introduction. It mainly introduces the background, and the research significance meanwhile goes through all the theories of academic study on Gelao. In addition, it illustrates the concepts, the research methodology and the topic of the dissertation and the reasons why this topic is chosen for study.The second section mainly reviewes Gelao's distribution and its evolution from Pre-Qin Dynasty untill Ming Dynasty, and by referencing the origins of all relevant theories, the rough distribution of Gelao and its overall evolution are understood.The third section, by detailed analysis in Ming Dynasty, figures out Gelao's geographic distribution, their regions'administration level and the status of Gelao in the multi-ethnics residence region, and through the analysis of historical references and relevant historical atlas as well as graphs, the outline of how Gelao are distributed among all the other ethnics in Southwest region of China is clearly drawn out.The fourth section focuses on analyzing features of Gelao's distribution, by which, from the nation's role and self-development' policies, it furtherly illustrateds the driving forces of the distribution, and how they persent impacts on the changes of distribution that they have been brought about, together with the interaction of all other factors.The fifth section narrates the distribution of Gelao in Qing Dynasty, in which, by referencing historic books and induction, the geographic distribution of Gelao, regions of its administration levels and the status of traces of Gelao people residing in other ethnics were presented through graphs and maps, while clarifying the evolution and Gelao's branches eventually.The sixth section mainly involves discussion about the outstanding features of Gelao's distribution, the driving forces of distribution and its influences in Qing Dynasty. The section compared Gelao's distribution during to two dynasties and eventually draws relevant conclusions.The seventh section is conclusion, which synthesized the research on Gelao's distribution in Ming and Qing Dynasties, concisely analyzing the driving forces of evolution, the significance and the ifluence that can lead to Gelao's distribution in the future.The history on evolution of Gelao's distribution is a miniature of Gelao people's life, which notwithstanding is broken and non-system, it has deep impact on ethnics' society in Southwest Regions doubtlessly. But it does contribute much to the understanding of Gelao's future distribution tendency, ethnic economic development, the inheritance of ethnic culture and ethnic relationship build-up.
