The Effects Of Breadth Of Open Innovation And Regional Environment On Innovation Performance

Faced with complicated modern innovation process and uncertainty environment, enterprise needs to gain some knowledge to form core competence and improve competitive advantage, so to exist and develop in the fierce competition. Open Innovation Theory argues that in order to realize sustaining innovation, enterprise has to break organizational boundary, cooperate with partners'portfolio and make full use of all useful resources. Only in this way will enterprise increase innovative ability and improve innovation performance.Cooperating with partners' portfolio is the most efficient way to gain external resources. This study mainly explores the effect of breadth of open innovation, which is the diversity of partners' portfolio, on innovation performance. What is more, the effect of regional environment is also included. This study not only tested the direct effects of breadth of open innovation and regional environment, but the interaction of them as well. After integrating of related literatures and based on resource dependent theory and open innovation theory, this study considers breadth of open innovation, regional environment (regional competitive environment, public administrative environment, social humanistic environment, living environment) and constructs concept model. Based upon a sample of 1279 enterprises in 22cities, this study concludes that breadth of open innovation stimulates innovation performance positively, regional competitive environment has a positive impact on innovation performance and strengthens the relationship between breadth of open innovation and innovation performance, while public administrative environment weaken this relationship, and social humanistic environment has a positive effect on innovation performance, living environment do not have remarkable effects.Theoretically, this study puts forward a framework of how breadth of open innovation effecting innovation performance. This study integrates different regional environment and explains how they works. Practically, the results help with strategy decision, enterprises should balance the breadth of open innovation and the effects of regional environment in order to improve innovation performance. Besides, this study also gives some hint about how to create innovative environment for governments and other administrative agencies.
