This paper presents a series of sensitive flow-injection chemiluminescence (FI-CL)methods for the determination of Human Immunoglobulin G; pyrocatechol and teapolyphones based on their enhancement effect on chemiluminescence intensity ofgalangin-potassium permanganate-polyphosphoric acid (PPA) system. The possible CLmechanism in the system is discussed as well. The present work aims to develop the detectionmethods for these substances and to spread the use of the CL technique. This paper consists of three parts.Part One A review on FI-CL analysisChapter One A review on FI-CL analysis and on the development of potassiumpermanganate CL systemThis chapter introduces characteristics and basic principles of CL analysis andflow-injection technique, and vistas prospects of FI-CL methods. Mainly it summarizes thecommon CL system related to potassium permanganate and the possible CL mechanism, andvistas the future trends of potassium permanganate CL system.Chapter Two The development of FI-CL methods for biological analysesFlow-injection chemiluminescence (FI-CL) methods for the assay of amino acids, proteinsand immunoassays are reviewed in this chapter, and 33 references are cited.Chapter Three The development of FI-CL methods for food analyses and for thedetermination of Phenolic compounds in the environmentIn this chapter, FI-CL methods for the determination of trace elements, additives, pesticides, antibiotics residues and oxidation resistance in foods, and phenolic compounds in theenvironments are reviewed and summarized. 52 references are cited.Part Two Application of KMnO4 chemiluminescence system on the assay ofProteins and Phenols ChapteChapter Four Selective determination of Human Immunoglobulin G by Flow-injectionChemiluminescenceA novel flow-injection chemiluminescence (FI-CL) method was developed for the selectivedetermination of human immunoglobulin G (IgG) in the presence of thiomersal by changingthe flow rates of peristaltic pump. The study was based on the independence and additivity ofthe CL signals of human IgG and thiomersal in the galangin-potassiumpermanganate-polyphosphoric acid system. In meantime, two equations relating to theconcentrations of mixing solutions of human IgG and thiomersal versus the CL intensity wereestablished and answered, on basis of which the content of thiomersal included in sampleswas simultaneously determined too. The enhanced CL intensity was in proportion toconcerntrations in the range 8.0×10-7-8.0×10-5 g/mL for human IgG and 1.0×10-7-2.0×10-6g/mL for thiomersal with the detection limits of 5.0×10-7 g/mL for human IgG and 6.0×10-8g/mL for thiomersal, respectively. The relative standard deviation (R.S.D) for 1.0×10-5 g/mLhuman IgG was 0.8 % and for 2.0×10-7 g/mL thiomersal was 2.0 % (n=10).The proposedmethod has been applied to determine three synthetic samples with the recoveries of91.5-109.5 %. In addition, the possible chemiluminescence mechanisms were discussed aswell.Chapter Five Determination of pyrocatechol in waters by Flow-injectionChemiluminescenceA novel flow-injection chemiluminescence (FI-CL) method for the determination ofpyrocatechol is presented, based on the chemiluminescence reaction of pyrocatechol in thegalangin-potassium permanganate-polyphosphoric acid system. Under the optimumconditions, the obtained linear range is 2.0×10-8-1.0×10-6 mol·L-1 and 2.0×10-6-5.0×10-5mol·L-1, respectively, with a detection limit of 1.0×10-8 mol·L-1. The relative standarddeviation (RSD) for the determination of 1.0×10-6 mol·L-1 pyrocatechol is 1.2 % (n=11). Theproposed method has been used to determine the contents of pyrocatechol in tab water, YellowRiver and wastewater from laboratory with recoveries in the range from 97.0 % to 105.3 %.The possible mechanism of chemiluminescence in the system is discussed as well. ChapteChapter Six Determination of tea polyphones in tea samples by Flow-injectionChemiluminescenceA novel flow-injection chemiluminescence (FI-CL) method for the determination of teapolyphones is presented, based on the chemiluminescence reaction of tea polyphones in thegalangin-potassium permanganate-polyphosphoric acid system. Under the optimumconditions, the obtained linear range is 1.0×10-8-5.0×10-6 g·mL-1, with a detection limit of2.0×10-9 g·mL-1. The relative standard deviation (RSD) for the determination of 1.0×10-6g·mL-1 tea polyphones is 2.0 % (n=10). The proposed method has been used to determine thecontents of tea polyphones in Green tea, black tea, Tie Guan Yin tea with recoveries in therange from 96.0 % to 107.5 %. The determination of tea polyphones in tea samples using thismethod shows satisfactory results comparable with National Standard Method.
