In recent years, the mine enterprises in China are experiencing unprecedented survival and development predicaments. In order to get out from these predicaments and achieve sustainable development in the 21st century, it is necessary and urgent for the mine enterprises in China to combine the informationization construction with technology and management innovation, i.e., carry out digital mine construction.Mines in themselves are real three-dimensional geographical and geological environments. So digital mine should also be real three-dimensional in order to achieve a more vivid effect. Thus it must be on the basis of three-dimensional geological modeling (3DGM). In addition, volume visualization technology provides 3DGM with powerful theory basis and good visualization approach.Based on such reasons, the contents of the paper lie in 3DGM and volume visualization and focuses on 3DGM. This work includes the major contents just as follows:(1) Strata visualization.Modeling methods of strata mainly include Grid and TIN. Based on a detailed research on these two ways, the paper chooses triangle network growth algorithm to build TIN model and utilizes Grid growth triangle network model to build 3D strata.(2) Reconstruction and dissection of 3D geological body.The 3D spatial modeling methods can be classified into facial modeling, volumetric modeling and mixed modeling. Based on a detailed research of these three spatial modeling methods, this paper adopts the simple Tri-Prism modeling method and successfully achieves a real 3D geological body reconstruction by the support of the drill data from Fangezhuang mine, Kai Luan Mine Company. Moreover, the paper studies dissecting algorithm based on STP model and achieves dissecting the geological body alongside any dividing section.(3) Dynamic display of 3D geological body.3D model transformations include translation, zoom, rotation, symmetry, shear and so on. The most often used transformations are translation, zoom, rotation and combiningtransformations. The paper does 3D transformation mentioned above to 3D geological body reconstructed above. Accordingly, the paper carried out 3D dynamic display on geological body.(4) Interactive operation and spatial analyzing of the 3D geological model.They include 3D dynamic display, profile drawing, spatial query, spatial distance measuring and volume measuring.(5) Progress of volume visualization research, and its function in digital mine and its key problems.The paper firstly researched and summed up the present theories and then implemented a demo system of 3DGM based on the drill data of Fangezhuang Mine area. The system achieves reconstruction , dissecting and 3D dynamic display functions. 3D dynamic display functions include translation , rotation , scale and combining transformations. And the system has the function of dissecting alongside any dividing section. Furthermore, the system has some spatial analyzing functions such as spatial query , distance measuring, etc.
