In this paper, the synthesis and application of the cationic polymer flocculant are researched and discussed. It is studied in the laboratory that a cationic copolymer was synthesized with acryloxyethyl trimethylammonium chloride(DAC) and acrylamide(AM) by inverse emulsion polymerization. Based on the theory of synthesis in inverse emulsion, some factors to the intrinsic viscosity of product and the stability of the system were studied, such as the ratio of volume of oil to water, the type of emulsifiers, the type of initiators, the ratio and concentration of DAC to AM,et al.Taking (NH4)2S2O8-Na2SO3 or high water-soluble initiator as the initiator, and its concentration 0.1-0.5% (Minitiator/Mmonoler), and the temperature 30℃.concentration of monomer 40%, mole proportion (AM/DAC) 2:1-2:3, pH value 5-6, oil/water1:1.0-1:1.4, nitrogen gas protection, agitating moderately, and reacting for 6 hours, the polymer are prepared in the laboratory. In order to characterize the products, the infrared absorption spectroscopy is utilized. The prepared products are evaluated by beaker flocculating and settling test in the laboratory, the flocculating mechanism of these products are discussed and analyzed detailedly. One can suppose that the macromolecules of cationic copolymer interact with colloid particles, neutralize their charge and form bridges between them. Performance experiment reveals that the product has better flocculent effect.
