In order to study the slurry erosion wear properties of materials, a slurry erosion test apparatus was designed and manufactured based on the consideration of comparison between the present slurry erosion apparatuses and cost factor, as well as the use of machine design and manufacturing, hydromechanics principle and the water work principle etc. This erosion tester is low in price and easy to be operated. The testing shows that this slurry erosion tester is stable and reliable, and it can be applied for erosion wear mechanism research and material selection.Slurry erosion wear tests were carried out on the manufactured test apparatus in order to study the erosion wear properties of SiC particle reinforced steel matrix surface composite. The results showed that the erosion wear rate of SiC particles reinforced steel matrix surface composite is smaller when the impact angle is less than 45°, and it will be increased when the impact angle is larger than 45°. The erosion wear mechanism of the tested composite is micro-cutting and grooving. The relative erosion wear resistance peak of the tested composite will be obtained at 45°impact angle, it is higher 3.03 times than that of the Q235 steel, because the SiC particles in the composite decrease the impact rate and energy of quartz sand particles in slurry. The erosion wear mechanism of composite will be changed as impact fracture and micro-cutting when the impact angle is larger than 45°. The weakening of the support of matrix for SiC particles and the protect of SiC particles for matrix will decrease the relative erosion wear resistance of the tested composite because of the falling of SiC particles made by the impact and micro-cutting of quartz sand particles in slurry. The erosion wear resistance oftested composite will be decreased with increase of quartz sand sizes in slurry, and will be increased with the increase of SiC particles sizes in composite.The results of the slurry erosion wear properties about three materials of Q235 steel, high chromium cast iron and low chromium cast iron showed that with the increase of impact angles, the erosion wear rates of high chromium cast iron increased. Its erosion wear mechanism is brittle fracture and scale spalling. The slurry erosive properties of low chromium cast iron is better when the impact angles are less than 45°. Its erosion wear mechanism is micro-cutting and grooving. The slurry erosion wear properties of Q235 steel show commonly and its erosive wear mechanism is micro-cutting and impacting wear. The erosion wear rate of these three materials all increase with the increase of the quartz's sizes.
