Ytterbium doped potassium gadolinium tungstate crystal (Yb:KGd(WO4)2,abbreviated Yb:KGW) and Holmium, Ytterbium co-doped potassium gadolinium tungstate crystal (Ho:Yb:KGd(WO4)2,abbreviated Ho:Yb:KGW) are two kinds of new solid laser materials which are apt to LD pump.In this paper Yb:KGW and Ho:Yb:KGW grown by Top Seeded Solvent Growth(TSSG) method, using K2W2O7 as flux. The defects of the crystals were observed and analyzed by SEM and polarizing microscopy.X-ray powder diffraction analysis were given to the crystals. Ho:Yb:KGW and Yb:KGW belong to monoclinic system with space group C2/c. The melting point and phase transition were obtained by TG-DTA analysis, there is no other changes besides phase transition below the melting point. The infrared spectrum and Raman spectrum of crystals were measured. The absorption peaks of the vibration modes were analysed and vibrational frequencies of vibratory activity were assigned. The absorption spectrum and fluorescence spectrum of the Yb:KGW and Ho:Yb:KGW crystals were obtained, the absorption cross section, the absorption coefficient and emission cross section (Yb:KGW:σ=1.2×10-19cm2, α=26cm-1, σemp=2.69× 10-20cm2; Ho:Yb:KGW:σ=2.12×10-19cm2,α=29cm-1, σemp=3.26×10-20cm2).
