Formaldehyde, which is one of the main air pollutions in the newlydecorated houses, would have much influence on indoor environment qualityand human health. The morphological respondence, cytological respondenceand biochemical respondence of plants to formaldehyde pollution based on theinvestigation of formaldehyde pollution condition in indoor air were all studiedin this article systemically. The purification ability and monitoring of plants toformaldehyde pollution were studied too. The main results were:1. The results of investigation indicated that there was formaldehydepollution in indoor air of newly-decorated buildings in Nanning. Among thosebuildings, the formaldehyde average concentrations of five offices and eightlabs of Guangxi university were 0.119 mg/m~3, 0.108 mg/m~3 and 0.091 mg/m~3,0.083 mg/m~3 after the buildings were decorated six months or one year. Theresults also indicated that the sources of indoor formaldehyde pollution weremainly from decoration materials and furniture.2. Injury symptom of brown spots appeared on some young leaves when the concentrations of formaldehyde were 5.698±0.110 rag/m~3~284.9±0.216 mg/m~3,and spots expanded with the extension of exposure time. After they werepolluted by formaldehyde of which the concentrations were 2.849±0.110mg/m~3and 5.491±0.118mg/m~3, their length and width of Vicia faba stoma were smallerthan that of the control. CAT and POD activities of seven species plants i.e.Duranta repens cv.goldenleaves, Bauhinia variegate, Chlorophytum comosum,Aloe vera var.chinensis, Haemanthus albiflos, Chlorophytum comosumvariegatum hort and Philodendron cv. Tempatation had obvious peak during thetime of the experiment, and MDA contents of plants mentioned above washigher than that of control.3. The sprouts of Duranta repens cv.goldenleaves and Bauhinia variegatecan be used to monitor formaldehyde pollution for they had typical injurysymptom when the concentration of formaldehyde was 5.698±0.110 mg/m~3 andthe exposed time was 12h. When formaldehyde concentrations were2.849±0.110mg/m~3 and 5.491±0.118mg/m~3,the max MCN‰of two broad beansroot rip were 10.41±0.43‰,6.36±0.40‰and 10.99±0.43‰,9.10±0.32‰respectively. The MCN‰of Vieia faba root rip was higher as formaldehydeconcentration became higher, therefore, micronucleus method of vicafaba rootrip cells can monitor formaldehyde pollution as well.4. Chlorophytum comosum, Aloe vera var. chinensis, Haemanthus albiflos,Chlorophytum comosum variegatum hort and Philodendron cv.Tempatationcould purify formaldehyde pollution. The purification effects of the 5 studied plants on formaldehyde pollution listed as follows: Chlorophytum comosum andChlorophytum.comosum variegatum hort were the best, PhilodendronTempatation came secondly, Aloe vera var.chinensis and Haemanthus albifloswas inferior to all those mentioned above. But Chlorophytum comosum beganhaving injury spots after treated with formaldehyde pollution for 24h, andthe injury spots increased with the extension of exposed time.5. The innovative points of this article were that we studied systemically themorphological respondence, cytologic respondence and biochemicalrespondence of plants to formaldehyde pollution for the first time, and alsosome sensitive plants were used to monitoring formaldehyde pollution.
