Computer simulation technology for Computer Numerically Control (CNC) machining plays a very important role in CAD/CAM and has been the focus since 1970's. Classical methods have been primarily based on two-dimensional (2D) cases via a carton-animation-mode. With the wider applications of CNC technologies, three-dimensional simulation for machining process has become the trends. This thesis mainly concerns a kind of simulation for 3-axis NC milling by solid modeling technologies based on Boolean operation, and presents the computer model of 3-axis NC milling simulation. The system include a primary framework of 3-axis NC milling simulation,a general NC program interpreter and a tool-swept-volume constructor. The thesis also enumerates some NC milling program and its simulation result as examples. The main work that is concerned with this thesis is as follows:1. An original framework is established for 3-axis NC milling simulation. The system includes five modules: a machine/tool manage module, a NC program edit/debug module, a general NC program interpret module, a milling-simulation module and a tool-swept-volume generator module.2. An interpreter is developed for interpreting NC program of generic formats, the interpreter can be applied to interpret NC program into motion orders in general cases and be a foundation for further development.3. A tool-swept-volume generator is designed and realized, the generator can generate tool-swept-volume according to the interpreting results and the information of current tools. It is also convenient for users to check their NC programs, apart from generating shapes of the milling parts by adopting step mode and break-point mode.
