Automatic slab clamp are extensively applied in steel factory to convey all kinds of cold rolled steel and hot rolled steel semi-processed products and finished steel roll,which belongs to special hoesting equipments in metallurgy. The design of it will directly affect the performance of working device. It further affects the working efficiency and economic cutoff of the whole device. The reliability of gripping and its strength is vital importance. If the design is not exactly,it will lead to destroy equipments or do harm to worers. So it's very important whether the clamp can work safely or not. The paper focuses on a 40T automatic slab clamp used in a factory,its machine is analyzed by theory and Finite Element Analysis.The three-dimensional model of clamp is created by using the Solid Works in the paper. The mechanics character of thd clamp mechanism was lucubrated based on analytical mechanics. The forces of various working conditions were obtained,which provided theoretically foundation for Finite Element Analysis.By making use of the finite element analysis software to progress force analysis,we get main datas of the elements' force and deformation,and find that the maximum principal stress at many points of the clamp's leg is stronger than the material's stress. So we optimize the clamp's overall structure,and improve finite element analysis on the optimized main elements of the clamp again until the strength meeting the needs. By intervenient checking the improved clamp,we can find that the ameliorated element intervene in well-balanced work of others elements,and they can work in the course of nature. We do fatigue analysis on the clamp's legs and self-opening plant,and improve the structure of the self-opening plant whose fatigue strength is not enough. Do force and fatigue analysis again after been improved until it reaches the life time needed in the design.The frictional factor between the clamp's tooth and the slab is very important to the clamping force and the reliability of gripping. In this paper we design a kind of easy reliability of gripping test machine,and make a test on the reliability of gripping to different material and chechered plates. Then we get several groups of correlation parameter,which can supply references.
