| Recently the State Council of People's Repbulic of China approved the Wuhan city circle as a "resource-efficient and environment-friendly" experimental comprehensive reform zone. So, it becomes very practical to make an investigation and evaluation of the ecological health of Wuhan City Circle.The regional ecosystem health and its change of Wuhan City Circle of the two periods of 1995-2000 and 2000-2005 are evaluated based on Land Use and Land Cover Change (LUCC) information. The main research content is as follows: (1) The LUCC information was captured based on Landsat TM image under the Erdas and ARC/Gis platform. And the LUCC information of 2000 and 2005 was acquired respectively through the overlay anlysis of the LUCC information layer and the TM image of the year of 2000 and 2005. (2) The indexes system of ecological health are built based on the pressure - state -response(P-R-S)model of the United Nations Department for Economic Cooperation Development (OECD) Agency, combining of expert knowledge and the local environmental status. The integrated model of ecological health is built applying those indexes, whose weights were given according to AHP. (3) The ecological integrated index of nine regions of Wuhan City Circle was calculated respectively. The results show that the status of ecological health of Wuhan City Circle is quite good. The values of ecological integrated index locate mainly on the there superior healthy grades during the two periods, though the values of ecological integrated index of very region show a little difference. There is no unhealthy region of the fifth grade according to the value. And the research shows that the ecological healthy degree of the Wuhan City Circle has improved except the Region of Xiaogan. (4) The changes of the area of Construction land and grassland are main factors to cause the regional cological health value change according to the analysis between LUCC and the integrated ecological health index.
