In this paper, petroleum sulfonates(PS) are synthesized with Vacuum cutⅡand Vacuum cutⅢextracted oil in single-tube falling-film sulfonation reactor and SO3 as sulfonation agent. The basic properties of products are tested. PS are also analyzed and characterized with ultimate analysis, infrared spectrum(IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), electrospray ionization mass spectrometry(ESI-MS). The factorts that effect on interfacial tention (IFT) are studied too. PS are combined with other surfactants, then the optimum oil-displacement formulations are selected and done by core displacement experiment.The results show both materials have high quantities of aromatic hydrocarbon and appropriate average molecular weights so they suit for the synthesization of PS as raw materials. The properties of Vacuum cutⅡproducts are better than Vacuum cutⅢproducts. The CMC of Vacuum cutⅡproducts is 0.11%, the value of surface tension is 30.82mN·m-1, the content of effective component is 80.46% and the CMC of Vacuum cutⅢproducts is 0.16%, the value of surface tension is 30.82mN·m-1, the content of effective component is 80.46%.There are three to four benzene rings, two branched chains in the PS of Vacuum cutⅡmolecule. There are three to four benzene rings, four branched chains in the PS of Vacuum cutⅢmolecule.Addtion agents such as sodium chloride, sodium sulfate, sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate can decrease the IFT. Differernt alcohols have different effect on the IFT of petroleum sulfonate-oil phase system. The ability of reduced the value of IFT is octanol>n-amyl alcohol>normal propyl alcohol. The groups of cruid oil can also effct the IFT of PS. The ability of reduced the value of IFT is colloid>asphaltene>aromatic>saturates. Ion concentration of water can also effct the IFT. PS are separated into four components, the average relative molecular weight and interfacial characteristic of the components are different significantly. The average relative molecular weight of benzene component is highest. The IFT of chloroform component is lowest in measured concentration range.During the study on the property in application of the petroleum sulfonates, it found that PS combined with the surfactant NR-1 can generate the lower IFT. Core displacement experiment show the optimum oil-displacement formulation can improve recovery by 24.4%.
