Riser handling is an operation process to transport riser from storage area to upward side of the wellhead on drillfloor in deepwater drilling platform, which includes storing riser and transporting riser and lifting riser. Riser handling is an important Component in automatic pipe handling system, which plays an important role in improving the safety of offshore drilling operation. As the deep and ultra-deep ocean areas are beginning to explore, there has been much research of riser handling system abroad recently. In China, the research and application of riser handling system are relatively less. As China begin to drilling in deep and ultra-deep ocean areas, research of riser handling system is imperative. This subject originates from the Key Projects: Designing and Building Technology of Deepwater Semisubmersible Drilling Platform. This paper focuses on the study of riser handling system for semi-submersible platform, and mainly includes the following details:First, the two storage formats (horizontal storage and vertical storage) were compared in detail on the net deck space comprehensively. On the basis of operating features and concrete requirements of target platform, general arrangement of riser handling system and the concrete scheme of two storage formats (horizontal storage and vertical storage) were finished.Structural designing of main mechanism of riser handling system (horizontal storage and vertical storage) were accomplished and three-dimensional models of mechanism were created by Solid works. The operation of storing riser and transporting riser and lifting riser were described in detail.Kinematics and static analysis of riser turnover mechanism were completed. Riser lifting system was equivalent to planar linkage mechanism to carry out kinematics analysis.Hydraulic system diagram of vertical riser handling system was decided, and the main action elements of the hydraulic system were designed.
