Tubular transferring is a very important part of drilling process. The automatic tubulartransferring technology has developed pretty well in western country. Similarly, because ofthe strict equipment requirement and large amount of money investigated, offshore drillinghas also applied automatic pipe handling system. However, in our country, we still use themost traditional way to do the tubular transferring work like our grandfather did: large labor, low efficiency and most importantly dangerous. With the development of drilling, the onshorepower catwalk technology will surely attract more and more eyes. Our project focuses on thisproblem. After analyze these latest pipe handling apparatus and combine our particular need,we developed a new type of pipe handling apparatus. This paper will introduce the mechanical structure, driving system and control system ofthis new power catwalk as following:First, we will give a brief introduction about current problems and provide the necessityof developing this new catwalk. Also we will introduce the development of pipe handingapparatus. Then we will give a detailed analysis of those most famous and representativepower catwalk. After we understand advantages and disadvantages of recent catwalks togetherwith our own need, we can design a overall structure of the new catwalk. We usePro/ENGINEER to model the catwalk and do the force analysis of important part andstructure. For those complication part or structure which are hard to solve analytically, we useFinite Element Method through Solidworks. Besides, we will also design the drive system andHydraulic system. Finally, we control the whole system by both PLC and control panel.
