Spiral bevel gear is a kind of surface gear with complex curve and is used to transfer rotary motion. It has many advantages such as overlapping co-efficiency, high loading capacity, smooth operation, low transmission noise and so on. However, there exits some disadvantages such as sharp corner along the top part of the tooth and stress concentration in the gear transmission and they break the normal meshing of the spiral bevel gear, so the spiral bevel gear addendum chamfering process needs carrying out. Now, the addendum chamfering process is achieved by operating the sand wheel manually, and this method has disadvantages such as low efficiency, great labor intensity and low accuracy. So in this paper, the cutter's position and pose calculation method is proposed and the chamfering automation is achieved. The achievements are as follows.(1) Study the spiral bevel gear's modeling method. By analyzing the actual machining process, the 3-dimensional model of the spiral bevel gear is created.(2) Deduce the Spiral bevel gear's addendum curve equation. Analyze the actual machining process of the spiral bevel gear, then the addendum curve equation is deduced and validated. Besides, propose a method of obtaining the chamfering boundary curve and lay foundation for the chamfering process.(3) Propose the calculating method of the cutter's position and pose in the spiral bevel gear chamfering process. Study the cutter's position and pose in the chamfering process and then propose the calculating algorithm of the cutter's center position and tilt angle.(4) Simulate the spiral bevel gear chamfering process, display the cutter's position and pose in graphical form, validate the addendum chamfering algorithm.(5) Carry on secondary development of UG NX using Visual Basic.Net, create the spiral bevel gear chamfering module and achieve modeling automation, addendum automated dispersion and finally simplify the modeling and addendum chamfering boundary curve solving process.
