Tailings dam-break to the social, economic and environmental resulted in huge losses, taking red mud tailings pond, Gaoshan Town in Henan Province as an example, the paper make a study on the assessment of red mud tailing reservior dam-break risk, analyze the stability of the different hight of red mud tailing dam. Provide reference for further expand the capacity of red mud tailings reservoir.This paper describes the characteristics of red mud tailings and operation at the present stage, analyze possible dam-break risk factors and model of dam-break, analyze the dam-break accident with fault tree analysis method during flood season. At the same time, propose effective, workable flood control measures. On this basis, the paper proposes risk evaluation index system of red mud tailings dam-break, use AHP to determine the the weight each evaluation index as well as the using multi-layer fuzzy pattern recognition theory to assess comprehensivly on the rating of red mud tailings dam-break risk, Gaoshan Town. Then, using of finite element analysis software, Geo-Studio, on the numerical analysis of theâ…¢red mud tailings dam. Evaluate the stability against sliding of dam of red mud tailings dam under the condition of normal operating conditions at a sub-dam, four sub-damand six sub-dam.The result indicates:(1) Effective drainage measures are repairing or adding drainage facilities to lower the water level during flood. (2) Judging from currently running situation, Red mud tailings pond belonging to B-class pond. There is a slight disease, With the basic conditions for safe operation, the reservoir area and dam should strengthen the daily management and maintenance. (3) Stability factor against sliding of III dam meet the requirements of third-class Tailings, and on the basis of the original design capacity, there is the space of further increasing the height of sub-dam to expand storage capacity.Finally, aimed at the analysis result, the author put foward to some corresponding suggestion, which will provide beneficial support for safe operation of red mud tailings pond in Gaoshan Town.
