Gd-Mg alloy is a high performance magnesium materials added the metal gadolinium, widely applied in all kinds of high-end mechanical manufacturing. For Gd-Mg alloy, both the method to determine the content of magnesium and gadolinium by XRF spectrometer and the method to determine the content of aluminum, calcium, and iron by ICP-AES are established.the methods are simple, convenient, safe and fast. Accuracy and precision is good too.The microstructures of Mg-Gd alloys were investigated by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersion X-ray analysis. The segregation situations of various elements in Mg-Gd alloy have been expounded through the experiments, it is concluded that the gravitational segregation is the main cause of the segregation and above middle section sampling is more closer to the comprehensive sample of the alloy. Providing accurate data reference for the further research on the application of Gd-Mg alloy, it is instructive for the production and testing.
