For the needs of developments and researches on new products, new process and new technique, one experimental rolling mill which is used for rolling steel with given thickness is increased behind the continuous caster in thin strip continuous casting line by Baosteel. It has very important reference value to make researches on the experimental rolling mill for type selection of rolling mill, stiffness design of the housing, strength evaluation of parts. In this paper, some deep researches on mechanical parameters, mill housing, work roll and roll system have been made through the rolling theory, material mechanics, elastic mechanics, finite element theory and technology of program development. The mechanical parameters of rolling mill are the foundations about calculation of stand stiffness and analysis and check of parts, and at the same time, they are the foundations of type selection of rolling mill. First, according to the characters of thin strip casting process, all kinds of physical factors influencing deformation resistance are analysed. Based on rolling theory, mechanical parameters models about thin strip rolling process are established. According to the thought of object-oriented programming, a visual program for mechanical parameters calculation is developed, and the mechanical parameters of the experimental rolling mill are calculated through this program. Based on the results, the type of experimental rolling mill is selected.Based on the theories of material mechanics and elastic mechanics, elastic deformation of the parts such as the frame, roll system, press down system, bearing seats and backup plates is analysed. A housing stiffness model about the experimental rolling mill is established. Based on this model, a visible program for housing stiffness calculation is developed. The housing stiffness coefficient is calculated and checked through this program. A conclusion that the housing stiffness meets the designed need is gained. In this way, the efficiency and accuracy about rolling milling design is enhanced.A rolling mill with sufficient strength is the necessary condition of normal rolling. In this paper, a finite element model about the frame and work roll of the experimental rolling mill is established and calculated, and the stress field and displacement field are obtained. Furthermore, the strength about the frame and work roll is analysed and checked. Under the maximal rolling force, a finite element model about work roll and backup roll was established, and the distribution of equivalent stress and maximal equivalent stress are obtained by nonlinear finite element method. The analysis results indicate that the maximal equivalent is in the range of permissible stress. The strength analyses about the experimental rolling mill for thin slap casting are completed.
